I love these. I get a bunch of issues at an affordable price? I don't mind the black and white. But I don't see more of these being solicited. All I see are more and more Marvel Masterworks at a whopping 50 bucks. Are the ESSENTIAL trades dead? IP: Logged |

Marvel's tpb person recently confirmed that Human Torch and Tomb of Dracula are still on the way. Howevere, my impression is that Marvel has devoted its publishing resources to other lines. IP: Logged |

No, the Essentials aren't dead, but they have definitely slowed down. Corey Sedelmeier, Marvel Collections Guru, posted on Dylanfan's website that there are two imminent volumes -- Essential Human Torch 1 in late summer and the postponed from 2002 Tomb of Dracula in October. Personally, I would love to see Spiderman 6 and Fantastic Four 4 & 5.... IP: Logged |

I think the Torch and TOD volumes are all we'll see for the rest of this year, then presumably they'll do more next year after finishing the massive Masterworks project. The Essential Hulk vol. 1 just came out in the new trade dress also, so at least all of the ones containing Silver Age material are all now available with the new covers. I don't think many people realize that the new trade dress volumes also have some art improvements - many of the photocopied pages are cleaned up, if not replaced. Still some rough spots, but improved overall. IP: Logged |

Alot of reprint initiatives have taken a back seat while Marvel's overtaxed collected editions staff gets 32 Masterworks cleaned up and out to market over the next 11 months. Essentials is one of those to take a back seat. I think the Torch and Dracula books will be it for this year, though perhaps one more will squeak out before the end of the year. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hello, Well, I've know for a little while about Torch & Drac but I was under the oath of secrecy, someone I can't mention sent me the info about it. Friend. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thanks to Bill Nolan... This is from Cory over on the Collected Editions forum at the Joe Quesada site: "Our current Essentials plans include the Essential Human Torch (from Strange Tales #101-134, Annual #2) and the Essential Tomb of Dracula (TOD #1-28, Giant-Size Chillers #1)."

It's silver age Torch. Silly stories (Paste Pot Pete!) but some nice Kirby and Adkins art. ------------------ IP: Logged |

No special knowledge, just assumption. The Torch book comes out real soon (I forget the date) and the Dracula book comes out on Halloween. I suppose there would be another one in November or December, but I would think not. I still think there is a schism between Masterworks and Essentials production, and Marvel may want to guage the Masterworks program before tossing an Essential out there that they may want to put in Masterworks. Sgt. Fury is a good example of this. If the Masterworks program is a bona fide hit, maybe they'll want to put out a Sgt. Fury book in 2004. That, besides the fact that they only have so many bodies able to work on projects in collected editions, is why I am suggesting that Essentials is going to go very slow. I hope. My own personal affections are for Masterworks, as you know. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, I prefer the Masterworks to the Essentials, although Marvel has never done the job DC has so far with their material. On the other hand, I will buy Essentials to see the b&w linework and for reading copies needed. I do hope the reprints of Masterworks are successful enough for them to get around to producing more volumes. Most notably: 1) FF, to finish up the Kirby era Essentialwise, I have always hoped they WOULD do something like GA Human Torch or Subby (doubt that will ever see Masterwork treatment). I really enjoyed the Golden Age of Marvel reprints (even if they were leftovers from Marvel Super Heroes in most cases) and really wish they would bring those back. Luckily, Microcolor exists and has some great GA Timely available... IP: Logged |

I'd certainly pick up both "Human Torch" and "Tomb of Dracula" if they were Masterworks. But, not Essentials. As I've mentioned before (in addition to not really liking the b&w presentation), the acrid smell of the ink in those telephone-bookish editions upsets my sinuses, and often initiates a sneezing spell. Maybe once they've been read a few times and aired out, this problem would subside, but I don't intend to go to the bother. I don't like the darned things anyway. On the good side, Marvel seems to be on the right track with re-publishing the original Masterworks. I'm looking forward to the volumes on "Captain America" and "Dr. Strange," in particular. I'm sympathetic in a way to those who like the Essentials for their huge quantity and affordability. I'm almost always receptive to bargains. But, somehow, seeing vibrant superhero shenanigans in b&w, just seems so lifeless to me. I love old-time b&w comic strips, which are full of shading and nuance. That seems natural and effective. But, super-heroes (with their garish costumes and backdrops) need color. The genre almost demands it. Especially Marvel, whose comics were so chock full o' super-folk. Without color, they all start looking alike. Heck, even with color, they sometimes start looking alike. Oh, well. Just my humble opinion. IP: Logged |

In my experience, the production values of the Essentials line have been hit and miss. Still, I love reasonably priced reprints and I view them as a way to get to read old stories that I otherwise will never see. The Torch stories are a good example. I'd love it if Marvel would package them as a Masterworks companion to the FF volumes, but somehow I don't see it happening. The original comics are getting harder and more expensive to purchase, so I'll just pick up the Essential book and hope for the best. IP: Logged |
